No business slowdown for Morristown company run by father and sons
Business: Bodei Contracting, 45 S. Park Place, Suite 273, Morristown, NJ
Owner: Michael Bodei. "My father started in the contracting business 35 years ago. I have worked with him since I was a kid. Bodei Contracting started in 1970," Michael said.
Staff: 30
Services: General contracting work; high-end custom finishing for kitchens, bathrooms and decks; and full-service painting and interior decorating. "We'll build a home on some occasions," Michael said.
What are you most proud of? We're one of the few in this business who do everything from start to finish. We do the whole job, starting from the architects and engineers and following through to the finished painting work and landscaping.
Some contracting companies advertise a complete service when in fact different contractors complete different phases of the job."We handle the entire job from start to finish no matter what kind of job you're talking about," Michael said.
Growing Business: 80 percent of new jobs are acquired through referrals from customers. "We do very little advertising." Also, "our clientele has grown more upscale, along with Morris County."
Goal: Having satisfied customers. "Absolutely. Having happy customers. Happy customers is what brings the money in. I tell people, 'If you're happy, I'm happy.'"
Busiest Time: All the time. We're busy constantly. We don't really have a slowdown. We're normally booked four to six months in advance." A lagging economy has not hurt the business. "This looks like it will be our best year ever."
Cost: Depends on the job. "We do an excellent job and we charge accordingly. I've got two kitchens going into two different houses: one costs $60,000 and the other is in excess of $200,000. We don't do cheap work. We're pretty selective at to who we work for," Michael added.
Customers: Homeowners from "the finer neighborhoods throughout Morris County. We're doing lots of work in Morris Township now."
Why People Choose You: The level of service. "We're on call 24 hours a day. When you call us, you speak to a member of the family. We're always on the job."
Communicating well with customers and understanding their wants and needs set us apart. "In this business, once you get beyond a certain level of qualification, it comes down to an emotional decision." The ability to communicate well with clients is very important, Michael said.
Keys to Success: No. 1 is being quick on the draw. Return phone calls quickly and stay right on top of what you're doing. Solve problems or issues as soon as they present themselves." Clear lines of communication with clients are vital. Placing importance on details, even those that seem trivial.
Advice to Homeowners: Read the fine print. "People tend to do arbitrary price comparisons without reading their contracts. It's very important to understand exactly what you're getting." Bargain prices often represent shoddy work. "So, basically read the contract and know exactly what you're getting." Price should not be the only factor considered when making an important decision.
